Article Processing Charges (APC)

  1. Overview

World Nutrition is a non-profit, fully open access journal published by the World Public Health Nutrition Association (WPHNA). In keeping with the Association’s mission to promote equity, access, and justice in public health nutrition, the journal operates a no-APC publishing model for research articles and maintains transparent, minimal cost-recovery practices for selected non-research content.

The journal does not charge submission fees and does not restrict access to published content.

  1. Research Article Processing (No APCs)

World Nutrition does not charge article processing charges (APCs) for:

  • Original research articles
  • Evidence-based research papers
  • Research articles reporting empirical findings

Authors are not required to pay any fees at any stage of the submission, peer review, or publication process for research articles.

All accepted research articles are professionally typeset and published as PDFs at no cost to the author.

  1. Review and Commentary Typesetting Fees

To ensure high-quality production while maintaining financial sustainability, World Nutrition applies a typesetting fee to certain non-research manuscript types.

3.1 Applicable Article Types

The following manuscript categories may be subject to a typesetting fee:

  • Literature reviews
  • Narrative reviews
  • Commentaries
  • Perspectives and similar non-research formats

3.2 Fee Structure

  • USD 65 base typesetting fee
  • USD 1.30 per 10 references included in the manuscript

This fee applies only after acceptance and covers professional layout and production costs.

  1. Membership Options and Benefits

Authors may waive the review/commentary typesetting fee if they are members of the World Public Health Nutrition Association (WPHNA).

4.1 Membership as an Alternative to Fees

  • Authors who have already paid WPHNA membership fees equivalent to or exceeding the typesetting cost are not required to pay the additional typesetting fee.
  • Membership supports the journal’s open access model and broader mission while reducing or eliminating author-facing publication costs.

4.2 Membership Benefits

WPHNA membership provides additional benefits beyond fee coverage, including:

  • Support for an independent, equity-focused journal
  • Opportunities to participate as a peer reviewer
  • Engagement with a global public health nutrition network
  • Early awareness of emerging research and debates

Membership categories, eligibility, and fees are described on the WPHNA membership page.

  1. Waivers and Equity Considerations

World Nutrition is committed to reducing financial barriers to publication.

  • Waiver requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis, particularly for authors from low- and middle-income countries or those without institutional support.
  • Waiver considerations do not influence editorial decisions and are handled separately from the peer review process.
  • Authors may request information about waivers after acceptance and prior to typesetting.
  1. Transparency and Editorial Independence
  • All publication-related fees are clearly disclosed on the journal website.
  • Ability or inability to pay fees has no bearing on editorial or peer review decisions.
  • The journal does not accept advertising or sponsorship from entities whose products or activities may compromise public health.

All journal operational costs are covered through WPHNA membership fees, and the editorial team serves on a voluntary basis.
