Abstract

There is a great deal of pressure to develop a safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19. However, we should take the long view and ask why we have had to deal with lethal virus outbreaks every few years. Our vulnerability to viruses may be due in part to changes in people’s diets. Particular attention should be given to increases in the use of infant formula. Unlike breastfeeding, feeding with infant formula does not protect and promote the development of infants’ immune systems. The absence of immune factors in infant formula should be fully recognized by the agencies responsible for the regulation of infant formula. Parents should learn about this deficiency of infant formula so they can make well-informed decisions about how they will feed their infants.
